We wear underwear 365 days a year, so it is the one piece of clothing that needs to be clean and tidy. Let's figure out how to take care of it in order to keep it in good condition as long as possible.
Tip 1. Get stains out as soon as they appear on the fabric, not after a few days.
This is a general rule of thumb for any stain on any garment: try to get the stain out as soon as possible. Sure, it's tempting and easy to just throw a stained bra in the hamper and then wash it with the rest of your clothes at the end of the week, but by doing so you're only letting the stain get into the fabric and making it harder on yourself. This is especially true for blood and discharge stains, which often and mercilessly ruin your panties.
If you notice blood, secretions or any other stains on your underwear, take them off as soon as possible and soak them in cold water in the sink. And only after you've cleaned the stain, you can send the item to the hamper to be washed later completely.
Tip 2. Wash your laundry by hand whenever possible.
Underwear is very delicate, even if it's made of 100 percent cotton and not at all lacy. Therefore, it requires special care when washing it. As we wrote in the beginning of the article, try not to wash your underwear in a washing machine - it can tear/damage and ruin.
Of course, you will not always have time for hand washing, and when there is no time at all - set the washing machine on a delicate mode and wash your laundry in it without mixing it with other clothes. In other cases try to wash them by hand.
For hand washing, fill a sink or large bowl with warm or cool water, gently immerse the laundry in it, and add a small amount of detergent. Gently wipe away stains and dirt. Finally, rinse with cold water. If you like, you can add a small amount of white vinegar to the water to make sure you get rid of any excess detergent.
Tip 3. If you do machine wash, use a special underwear bag.
If you have absolutely no time for hand washing, then you should invest in special bags for underwear - just put your panties and bras in them and be relaxed - the bag will protect them from damage and provide a more delicate wash. By the way, you can also wash your silk nighties in it.
Tip 4: Use gentle detergents that are suitable for washing with tepid water.
Whether you wash your laundry by hand or in a washing machine, you should use a mild detergent. If you go further and buy a detergent designed specifically for washing underwear, you won't go wrong. By the way, always wash your underwear in cool water - it's best for this purpose.
Tip 5. Avoid fabric softeners and bleach.
Fabric softeners are often used during laundry to prevent fabric from becoming coarse (as washing can often ruin fabric). But this does not work for underwear - such products can ruin your favorite panties and bras. The same goes for bleach - it's great for white clothes, but not for underwear (even white).
Therefore, do not use such products when washing delicate items.Tip 6. Wash underwear separately from the rest of your clothes.
If you are going to wash your underwear in a machine, make sure that you load only the underwear itself, and wash the rest of your clothes separately. This is very important because other less delicate clothes can ruin your underwear. Even in a special protective bag, wash underwear separately from the rest of the clothes.
Tip 7. Wash silk and lace underwear separately from cotton.
This is another rule that may seem too "picky", but which, nevertheless, will save more than one of your silk or lace underwear sets. The fact is that cotton underwear is easier to wash: cotton is more durable. Silk and lace underwear require special delicacy during washing. So try to wash them separately.
Tip 8: Do not dry your laundry in a tumble dryer.
A tumble dryer is convenient, but it can ruin your underwear. Therefore, to keep your panties and sconces looking their best, simply hang them on a clothesline or spread them out on a folding dryer. This way, your underwear will retain its shape and won't wear out quickly.
